The Balkans

Link to introductory page

This page combines the states which once made up Yugoslavia. After the troubles which led to the splitting up of that country, manhole covers are to be found scattered across the different countries with little regard to present day boundaries. Even here PAM is making inroads, especially in Croatia which has undergone widespread renewal of roads and pavements in recent years.

There was little sign of distinctive covers in this town which suffered greatly during the siege by Serbia in the 1990s. This cover was eventually found in a suburb, half hidden under a flower container.

This town is one of relatively few in the Balkans that have introduced distinctive local designs. In the recently revamped town centre is a series of designs with the coat of arms including a stork.
