Brickhouse Foundry originated in 1858 and became a well-known manufacturer of Drainage Castings. In 1944 the company was acquired by Mr Ralph Godfrey who, over a period of the following 4-5 years transformed the company. Apart from producing just the British Standard patterns of Manhole Covers and Frames, the company also introduced an extended range of their own very popular designs, both in cast iron and mild steel. Brickhouse Foundry was closed in 1984 but reopened before the group was taken over by Glynwed in 1986. Glynwed sold the group on in 1997 and the Southampton Foundry was closed by the new owners in 1998 with Brickhouse foundry being closed in 1999 and demolished in 2004.

Dudley. Dudley. One of the most widely distributed ranges of manhole covers in England bears the name of Thomas Dudley Ltd,of Dudley, West Midlands. Established in 1920, this firm specialises in manufacturing iron castings to customer specifications in its privately owned fully mechanised foundry which operates six automated moulding lines. In 2007 their ‘Dauntless’ range of construction and plumbing industry iron castings was the largest in the UK. It is still a family firm. In 2007 the chairman was H.J.T.Dudley and one of the managing directors was M.J.Dudley. Website: www.thomasdudley.co.uk.
