Italy

For a country with such a strong cultural history, the design of manhole covers in Italy is somewhat disappointing with few distinctive designs. As in England, the main points of interest are the names of the foundries, which often have a wide regional distribution.

The decoration on the Cathedral shows the source of the design which features on many of the covers in Brescia.

The lack of manhole covers in a city where most of the streets are actually canals is scarcely surprising, but the few that are to be found are a disappointment. The resort of Lido has a separate design of cover, but this too is functional rather than decorative. In the major squares access to drains and sewers is through stone slabs which form part of the overall design of the paving.
